Photo of the entrance to Gangotri Temple in the Garhwal Himalaya
The temple was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century, funded by Amar Thapa Singh, the Gurkha governor of the Garhwal. Pilgrims coming to Gangotri before that time worshipped the goddess Ganga without the assistance of the temple.
The Gurkhas were conscientious supporters of Garhwal's temples during their brief rule, but are otherwise remembered for a regime that combined neglect with plunder.
