First ascent of The Prow

Himalaya, India

October 2012

Climbed by Mick Fowler, Paul Ramsden

Other members of the expedition: Steve Burns, Ian Cartwright

Joint winner of the Piolets d'Or 2013

Mick Fowler and Paul Ramsden have made the first ascent of the north-east ridge ("the Prow") of Shiva, in the Indian Himalaya.

The lower part of the ridge provided challenging snow and ice climbing, with an aid section to circumvent an impasse. Above this, the route followed ice choked cracks in Chamonix-style granite, and thinly iced slabs. From the summit, Fowler and Ramsden descended the south ridge and then found a way down the southeast flank to their base camp.

Shiva  is named on some maps as Bahai Jar.
