Polish mountaineers Adam Bielecki and Janusz Golab made the first winter ascent of Gasherbrum I (hidden Peak). They ascended via the Japanese route up the Northwest Face of the mountain. In order to take advantage of a brief period of good weather they set off for the summit push from Camp 3 (7040m) at midnight, climbing in very difficult conditions to reach the summit at 8.30am.

On the day that Adam Bielecki and Janusz Golab reached the summit, three climbers from a separate international expedition disappeared high on the mountain while attempting a new route.
